Our First CCK Research Retreat

In March 2024, Community-Centered Knowledges: Fostering Black Wellness in Montreal (CCK) hosted its first-ever Research Retreat at the peaceful Beatnik Hotel in Bromont, QC. Over the course of a weekend, Black intervention workers, social workers, therapists, body workers, community organizers, and researchers came together to reflect, rest, and reimagine.

Rooted in our central research question—“What does Black wellness mean to us? And who are we?”—this retreat offered space for deep connection, collaboration, and collective inquiry. Through conversation, rest, and knowledge-sharing, participants explored how care is practiced, embodied, and nurtured within Black communities.

This gathering was part of CCK’s larger mission: to build a physical and virtual knowledge hub that documents and uplifts Black-centered approaches to healing in Montreal. Supported by Concordia University and community-based organizations, CCK is committed to addressing the psycho-social impacts of anti-Black racism with insight, imagination, and care.

The retreat reminded us that Black wellness is already in motion—held and shaped by those doing the work every day. We’re honoured to continue this journey together.
